Hi, I'm James — founder of Canon Wood Company — and that’s my wife Julie beside me. I started Canon Wood Co. in 2024 with a simple goal: to build timeless, handcrafted wood furniture that brings people together.

Woodworking wasn’t always the plan. For over 15 years, I worked in medicine — first as an EMT in a busy Atlanta ER, and later as a Physician Assistant in the ICU. My medical career took me across the globe, from training frontline medics in Iraq to delivering babies in rural clinics in Uganda. That chapter of my life taught me discipline, attention to detail, and deep compassion — all qualities that now shape my work in the shop.

Julie and I met in the ICU, where she was working as a nurse. During the pandemic, we found refuge from the chaos of COVID by slowly renovating our home together. It was during those late nights sanding, sawing, and learning that I discovered a deep love for woodworking — one that wouldn’t let go.

In 2024, Canon Wood Company was born — built on the belief that homes need more than just furniture. They need gathering places. We craft heirloom-quality dining tables, desks, and sideboards from locally-sourced Southern hardwoods like walnut, oak, sycamore, and pine. Every piece is made to last and designed to be used — for dinner parties, game nights, good conversations, belly laughs, and everything in between.
